Metro Transit is the transportation resource for the Twin Cities, offering an integrated network of buses, light rail and commuter trains as well as resources for those who carpool, vanpool, walk or bike. Metro Transit is one of the country's largest transit systems, providing roughly 90 percent of the 78 million bus trips taken annually in the Twin Cities. Each weekday customers board Metro Transit buses and trains an average of 250,000 times. Metro Transit operates the Hiawatha light-rail line, Northstar commuter rail line and 123 bus routes (66 are local) service routes and 51 are express routes and 6 contract service routes, using a fleet of 885 buses. The majority of the agency's fleet (696) are standard 40-foot buses — 97 of these are hybrid-electric vehicles. Additionally, there are 167 articulated ("accordion") buses and 22 are over-the-road coach-style buses. All Metro Transit buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts or ramps and racks for bicycles. All trains feature storage areas for bicycles and luggage.

St. Louis County
Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance and snow removal of over 3,000 miles of County-State Aid Highways (CSAH), County Roads, and Unorganized Township Roads. Public Works is also responsible for the inspection and maintenance of over 600 state bridges over 10 feet in length, 300 bridges that are less than 10 feet in length, and over 40,000 traffic signs within St. Louis County. University of Minnesota Roadway Safety Institute
The Roadway Safety Institute is the Region 5 University Transportation Center (UTC) funded through the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21) federal transportation bill passed in 2012. The region includes Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The Institute conducts activities that further the mission of the UTC program of the USDOT—to advance U.S. technology and expertise in the many disciplines that make up transportation through education, research, and technology transfer activities at university-based centers of excellence. Driven by the goal of preventing crashes to reduce fatalities and life-changing injuries, the Institute’s activities focus on user-centered transportation safety systems. The consortium is led by the University of Minnesota. Other members are the University of Akron, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and Western Michigan University.
University of Wisconsin-Madison TOPS Lab
At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the College of Engineering’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) has a long and distinguished history dating back to 1857, with the mission to transform society through the creation, application, and transfer of engineering knowledge. The CEE department has more than 30 faculty, more than 300 undergraduates, and almost 200 graduate students. Since 2003, the Traffic Operations and Safety Laboratory (TOPS Lab) has been the center of research and development for several facets of transportation engineering, safety, and operations, providing service throughout the Midwest and nationally. These include transportation systems management and operations (TSM&O), intelligent transportation systems (ITS), systems engineering, planning for operations, evaluations, and performance management for safety and mobility. CEE and the TOPS Lab have recently expanded research and service in areas including smart city initiatives, connected and automated vehicles, and big data analytics.
